RIVER

On or about the afternoon of this life
I came down to the river’s edge
And gave up dry land for her charms
And though it seems I’m short on facts
All emerald shades and shifting tracks
I was there and drifting
Peaceful in her arms

Would she now take me ‘round the bend
Or was this my sorry end

I go in
It begins
I go in
It begins
River carry me
River carry me

And then the current caught me up
Expectation like a drug
Rose and fell
And rose again in sweet refrain
Over the rocks and ocean-bound
I was inventing sight and sound
Solstice night
A sky-wide window in the rain

Was I then baptized and made young
Or was there acid on my tongue

I go in
It begins
I go in
It begins
River carry me
River carry me

It’s over my head
